Value Investing Applied in Portfolio Management Featuring MBG Capital CEO Michael Garcia
For years, UBP Large Capitalization Philippine Equity Portfolio was the country’s best-performing unit investment trust fund, giving investors spectacular returns. The man responsible for that was Michael Garcia.
Today, Michael B. Garcia is CEO and Chief Investment Officer of MBG Capital, a financial consultancy and investment advisory firm he founded in 2011. Prior to that, he was the Head and Chief Investment Officer of the Trust & Investment Services Group of UnionBank of the Philippines from 2002 to 2011.
At UnionBank, he managed over US$1 billion of client portfolios and institutional mandates, including the top performing unit investment trust funds in the Philippines. The UBP Large Capitalization Philippine Equity Portfolio was hailed by Bloomberg (September 23, 2011) as the best performing equity fund in the Philippines; while, the UBP Philippine Peso Bond Portfolio garnered a Lipper Award for Best Performing Philippine Peso Medium Term Bond Fund in 2010.
Before embarking on a career in asset management, Michael worked at General Motor Europe from 1997 to 2002 in its London and Brussels offices, where he held various positions in capital markets and corporate finance. In the earlier part of his career, he worked as a credit risk manager at Citytrust Banking Corporation, the local affiliate of Citibank NA in Manila.
Michael is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder. He holds an MBA degree from IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain and an undergraduate degree in AB Management Economics from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines.
