SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City View mapLike many women, you’re probably in charge of your family’s household budget. You do the groceries, pay the bills, and plan for purchases. But as a young mom, you may be struggling with your day-to-day finances.
You may not yet be earning as much as you can. You have childcare expenses you never had to deal with before. You may be paying off a car loan or even a mortgage. You may also be expected to support your parents or in-laws. And of course, with all the stress and challenges at home and at work, you may be racking up credit card debt for shopping, vacations, and eating out.
But even if you’re good at day-to-day money management, as a lot of women are, are you just as good at planning for your long-term financial goals?
Women and Money
Many surveys and studies have been made about women and money, but they all boil down to these conclusions
- Women are not very confident when it comes to the subject of money, especially investing.
- They focus more on saving and budgeting and leave long-term financial planning to their husbands.
- They get intimidated by some financial concepts, including acronyms and jargon, which they find boring or complex.
- They rely more on family members and friends for financial advice rather than financial professionals.
If these describe you right now, consider the fact that in general women outlive their husbands, because you need to start thinking long term.
Do you have enough for your children’s education?
Are you adequately insured against life’s risks?
Have you started investing for retirement?
Your Biggest Money Mistake
The biggest financial mistake women, including young moms, make is that they fail to properly plan for the future.
You may be procrastinating so you keep putting it off. You may find it boring or confusing so you don’t even bother. Or you are just too busy multitasking as a supermom that you just can’t find the time to start.
But you can’t just let your life pass you by. You have dreams for yourself and your family. Whether your goal is to have a comfortable retirement with your husband, the best education for your children, or your own business, it all starts with a plan.
In “Mpowered: Financial Planning for Young Moms,” Salve Duplito, RFP, multi-awarded financial journalist, financial planner, and co-host of ANC’s On the Money will guide you through your finances and help you plan for your financial future. It’s time for you to be Mpowered!
